Obituary For Alan George Thummel
Alan George Thummel passed away at his home surrounded by his family on February 26, 2026. Alan was born in El Dorado, Kansas to Arnold and Lorraine Thummel on March 7, 1953. He grew up in Augusta, Kansas where he attended Augusta High School before moving to Oklahoma City to complete his senior year at Putnam City West High School. Alan married Karen Rush in 1973 in Fort Worth, Texas. Alan and Karen raised their three children in Yukon, Oklahoma. Alan worked as a brakeman\switchman for the Santa Fe Railroad. Later he managed a metal processing plant in Oklahoma City from which he retired. He is remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who was always there to support his family. His humor and easy-going spirit could brighten any room, and his steady presence brought comfort to those around him. He was passionate about politics and a lifelong member of the Democratic Party, serving as an outspoken advocate for civil and human rights for all Americans. He believed in fairness, in standing up for others, and staying engaged with the world around him. He was a longtime member of The Knights of Columbus. He found joy in the simple and meaningful parts of life. He loved his animals and cared for them with the same tenderness he showed his family. He coached his children's sports teams. He showed up not just to teach the game, but to teach character, perseverance, and teamwork. His pride in his family was unmistakable. Music was another constant in his life. He loved to listen to music, and he loved even more to play his guitar. He found peace in his garden and yard work; watching things grow brought him satisfaction, a reflection of the way he nurtured the people in his life.
Alan is survived by his wife Karen of 52 years; his children, Anna Woodhams and husband Michael, Matthew Thummel, Allison Alikhani and husband Brian; his grandchildren Madison, Max, Emarie and Cameron; his brother Craig Thummel; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents Arnold and Lorraine Thummel, brother Donald, sister Constance, and sister Deborah Barter.
