Obituary For James Donald Niehues

James Donald Niehues was a charter member of Council 6478. He died Thursday, November 23, 2000, at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born to Ervin & Eunice Niehues on December 13, 1939 in Hydro, OK. In 1964, he married Geraldine Brockhaus at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in El Reno, OK, moving to Yukon 31 years ago with his wife and children. "Jimmy Don" was raised in Union City, OK, along with his brother Jerry and sister Joynell. He attended and graduated from Union City Schools and then went to work at Page Air Motives for 13 years before going to Dayton Tire in Oklahoma City. He served with the Army National Guard and then the Air National Guard where he retired in 1985. A devoted Catholic, he was a member of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Yukon, where he was also a charter member of the Yukon Knights of Columbus. Jim spent many years working with the Pack 390 Boy Scouts. Pops was most happy when he was with his children and grandchildren, whether it was an awards assembly or a sporting event. He was always looking out for the young person who did not have anyone to congratulate them or give them a hug at the end of a basketball game. Jim was a true people person, with a tremendous love for his friends and a strong desire to help solve the world problems with the morning "Coffee Gang". He is preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Hunter Niehues and father-in-law, Lawrence Brockhaus. Jim is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jerry; children: Craig Niehues and wife Debbie, Cheryl Niehues, Jay Niehues and wife Christy, Amy Orr and husband Jay and Kara Wynn and husband Neal; grandchildren: Emily, Megan, Madison, Jacob, Abby, Krystal, Sydney, Cole and Courtney as well as "Baby Girl" Niehues due in April; mother-in-law, Granny Brockhaus; brother, Jerry Niehues and wife Rose, sister, Joynell Gonshor, many nieces, nephews, cousins and his unofficial adopted children, Jerry Barker and Alicia Lewis.

The more than 2.1 million Knights of Columbus around the world join Catholics and people of all faiths today as we mourn the death of our Holy Father Pope Francis, the Bishop of Rome and spiritual leader of the Catholic Church. Pope Francis was a powerful witness to charity and fraternity, calling us from his first days as pope to reach out to the margins of society and serve those who are too often forgotten. The Knights of Columbus is particularly grateful for its close relationship with our late Holy Father. Pope Francis continually encouraged our charitable mission and offered his blessing for our work, especially our humanitarian efforts around the world. Pope Francis was also very supportive of our efforts to help Catholic men be better husbands and fathers and take up co-responsibility for the Church’s mission of evangelization.Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.- Supreme Knight Patrick E. KellyPhoto: His Holiness Pope Francis received Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly in a private audience at the Vatican on Dec. 20, 2024. The Supreme Knight provided an update to the Holy Father on notable activities of the Knights of Columbus, including the growth of the Cor men’s faith formation initiative, charitable work around the world, and support for vocations.
